Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand

[3]And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away." And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. [8]And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. The Pharisees Demand a Sign
[11]The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. [12]And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation." [13]And he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod
[14]Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. [15]And he cautioned them, saying, "Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."(2) [16]And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. [17]And Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? [18]Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? [19]When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" They said to him, "Twelve." [20]"And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" And they said to him, "Seven." [21]And he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?"
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
[22]And they came to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. [23]And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, "Do you see anything?" [24]And he looked up and said, "I see men, but they look like trees, walking." [25]Then Jesus(3) laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. [26]And he sent him to his home, saying, "Do not even enter the village."
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
[27]And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" [28]And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." [29]And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ." [30]And he strictly charged them to tell no one about him.
Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection
[31]And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again. [32]And he said this plainly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. [33]But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man."
[34]And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. [35]For whoever would save his life(4) will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. [36]For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? [37]For what can a man give in return for his soul? [38]For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." Zo op het eerste gezicht lijkt dit een uitroep die niet ongewoon is voor een blinde man die langzaam maar zeker het licht in zijn ogen terug krijgt, en contouren van mensen ziet als zijn het bomen. Hij wist blijkbaar hoe bomen er uit zagen, dus wellicht is hij niet heel zijn leven blind geweest. (Hoewel er verklaarders zijn die denken dat hij blind geboren is, en niet goed kan interpreteren).
Bij nader inzien is het toch niet zo’n makkelijk verklaarbare uitspraak. Immers, zo vanzelfsprekend is het niet als je mensen met bomen vergelijkt. Bovendien mensen die als bomen wandelen? Bomen wandelen niet. Het is evengoed opmerkelijk dat deze uitroep in de bijbel opgenomen is. De vraag is dus waarom. We moeten een diepere betekenis zoeken.
Voorafgaand aan deze geschiedenis onderwijst Jezus zijn discipelen. De farizeeën hadden Jezus om een teken van de hemel gevraagd, maar zij kregen het niet. Jezus waarschuwt zijn discipelen voor het zuurdeeg van de farizeeën en van Herodes, voor wetticisme en wetteloosheid. In de boot op het meer ontdekken de discipelen dat ze geen brood bij zich hebben. Jezus wijst hen dan op Zijn vermogen om brood te vermenigvuldigen.
Vervolgens komen ze in het stadje Bethsaïda, een vissersplaatsje, en de inwoners daarvan brengen een blinde man bij Jezus. Zij verwachten veel van Hem, en ze smeken of Hij hem wil aanraken. Zijn de inwoners zo begaan met deze man? Of wilden ze graag een wonder zien? Bethsaïda was de stad waar Filippus, en Andreas en Petrus vandaan kwamen. We mogen dus wel aannemen dat Jezus en Zijn discipelen daar bekend stonden. Bovendien deed de Heere Jezus de meeste wonderen in de streek tussen Kapernaum en Bethsaïda. Duizenden mensen werden wonderlijk van eten voorzien. Velen werden genezen van hun kwalen. Zoveel zelfs, dat Jezus zei dat de buitenlandse steden Tyrus en Sidon zich bekeerd zouden hebben als in deze steden zoveel krachten waren gebeurd. In deze streek zond Hij Zijn discipelen twee aan twee uit. Hij sprak uit dat wie hen niet geloofden, ze een zwaarder oordeel zouden hebben dan Sodom en Gomorra. Maar geloof dat Hij de Messias is, vond Hij er niet veel, alleen geloof in Zijn wonderen, en het moment kwam dat velen van Hem wegliepen.
Daarom neemt Jezus de man bij de hand, naar buiten de stad. Later mag de man ook niet terug naar de stad. De tijd om te getuigen is voorbij. Maar Zijn mededogen met verloren, blinde mensen is zo groot dat Hij deze man gaat genezen. De wijze waarop Jezus geneest is afgestemd op de tijd, dat wil zeggen dat Hij ook daarin onderwijs geeft, maar wel op bedekte wijze.
Jezus deed speeksel op de oogleden van de blinde. Op iemand spugen was teken van verachting (Jes. 50:6). Niet dat Jezus de man verachtte, maar wel de blindheid van deze man. We kunnen het ook anders zien, want speeksel heeft ook een heilzame werking. Nergens genezen wonden sneller als in je mond, vanwege de antimicrobiële, pijnstillende en bloedstollende eigenschappen van speeksel.
“Zie je al wat?” Dat is toch een rare vraag van Jezus. Vele anderen genas Hij op zijn spreken en hier maakt Hij een tussenstop. We moeten daarom met aandacht luisteren naar het antwoord van deze man. “Ik zie mensen als bomen wandelen.” De man zal zich niet bewust zijn geweest van dit antwoord, maar de Geest heeft het niet voor niets op laten schrijven. Wat betekent dit antwoord? Een aanwijzing vinden we in Job 19:10[show]Job 19:10
[10]He breaks me down on every side, and I am gone,
and my hope has he pulled up like a tree. : “Hij heeft mijn verwachting als een boom weggerukt.” Verwachting is als een boom. Een beeld dat veel in de bijbel voor blijkt te komen. Een kleine bloemlezing:
Jacob zegent Jozef en noemt hem een jonge vruchtboom, een jonge vruchtbare boom bij een bron. Elk van zijn takken loopt over de muur. (Gen 49:22[show]Genesis 49:22

Steeds opnieuw verbeelden bomen verwachting uit. Een verwachting die gekoppeld is aan de vrucht van de boom. Geen vrucht, geen verwachting.
“Ik zie mensen als bomen.”. Ook al is zijn beeld niet scherp, het beetje licht dat de man nu ziet, geeft hem verwachting voor de toekomst. Ook al vindt zijn genezing in stappen plaats; Jezus laat hem wennen aan het licht. Hij ziet wel vage contouren, maar er is hoop, verwachting.
Van de stadsgenoten van de blinde man was geen verwachting meer. Over en uit. Wee u Bethsaida! Als in Tyrus en Sidon dergelijke krachten gedaan zijn… zij zouden zich toen bekeerd hebben (Matt 11:21[show]Matthew 11:21
[21]"Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. (ESV) ). Maar er was daar alleen geloof in wonderen… niet in de Heiland. Aangrijpend beeld dat deze man verwoordt. Hij zelf zag contouren en verwachtte meer. De Geest laat echter onzichtbare contouren zien met deze eenvoudige woorden.
In stappen breekt het licht door bij deze man. Jezus legt Zijn helende handen op de ogen van de halfziende man, waarna het licht volledig doorbreekt. Hij zag allen, ver en duidelijk. Jezus doet geen half werk.
Ooit stonden er twee bomen in het Paradijs: de boom van het leven en de boom van kennis van goed en kwaad. Het eten van de laatste boom bracht inderdaad kennis van goed en kwaad, maar voedzaam was de vrucht niet, en het kwaad was geschied. God gaf Zijn Zoon Jezus om te herstellen. Hij was een loot uit een afgehouwen tronk. Dus zelfs van die afgehouwen boom was verwachting. (zie ook Job 14:7[show]Job 14:7
[7]"For there is hope for a tree,
if it be cut down, that it will sprout again,
and that its shoots will not cease. ). Ook van Israël was verwachting. Jezus ontsproot uit dat volk. Hij kwam tot het Zijne, maar de zijnen namen Hem niet aan (Joh 1). Daarom zei Hij tot de genezen man: ga niet terug naar de stad en houd je mond.
God doet geen half werk. Nog is deze afgehouwen tronk vruchtbaar als zij uit de Wortel van Isaï (Jes 11:10) gaat leven. Heidenvolken zullen naar deze Wortel vragen! Zij worden ingeënt (Rom 11[show]Romans 11
The Remnant of Israel
[11:1]I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham,(1) a member of the tribe of Benjamin. [2]God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he appeals to God against Israel? [3]"Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life." [4]But what is God's reply to him? "I have kept for myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal." [5]So too at the present time there is a remnant, chosen by grace. [6]But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
[7]What then? Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, [8]as it is written,
"God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes that would not see
and ears that would not hear,
down to this very day."
[9]And David says,
"Let their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them;
[10]let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see,
and bend their backs forever."
Gentiles Grafted In
[11]So I ask, did they stumble in order that they might fall? By no means! Rather through their trespass salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous. [12]Now if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their full inclusion(2) mean!
[13]Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry [14]in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous, and thus save some of them. [15]For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead? [16]If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
[17]But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root(3) of the olive tree, [18]do not be arrogant toward the branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you. [19]Then you will say, "Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in." [20]That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become proud, but fear. [21]For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you. [22]Note then the kindness and the severity of God: severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness. Otherwise you too will be cut off. [23]And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again. [24]For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree.
The Mystery of Israel's Salvation
[25]Lest you be wise in your own sight, I want you to understand this mystery, brothers:(4) a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. [26]And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written,
"The Deliverer will come from Zion,
he will banish ungodliness from Jacob";
[27]"and this will be my covenant with them
when I take away their sins."
[28]As regards the gospel, they are enemies of God for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. [29]For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. [30]For just as you were at one time disobedient to God but now have received mercy because of their disobedience, [31]so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you they also may now(5) receive mercy. HEERE, onze Heere, hoe machtig is Uw Naam op de hele aarde! U Die Uw majesteit getoond hebt boven de hemel.
Uit de mond van kleine kinderen en zuigelingen hebt U een sterk fundament gelegd, omwille van Uw tegenstanders, om de vijand en wraakzuchtige te laten ophouden.
Als ik Uw hemel zie, het werk van Uw vingers, de maan en de sterren, die U hun plaats gegeven hebt, wat is dan de sterveling, dat U aan hem denkt, en het mensenkind, dat U naar hem omziet?
Toch hebt U hem weinig minder gemaakt dan de engelen en hem met eer en glorie gekroond. U doet hem heersen over de werken van Uw handen, U hebt alles onder zijn voeten gelegd:

Hoe het was
Hoe machtig is Uw Naam! Ongeëvenaard!
Dat is het doel van God: Zijn Naam. Zijn Naam is Wie Hij is. De IK BEN.
Om die Naam te verheerlijken schiep Hij de hemel en de aarde, schiep Hij ook de mens.
Schoonheid is de maat.
Drie kernwoorden vertellen het ‘waarom’ van de mens: positie, doel en werk.
De mens heeft een unieke plek van glans & glorie. Een positie die weinig minder dan die van de engelen is. Tegelijk wordt gevraagd: wat is de mens? Nietig en machtig.
De mens heeft één doel: lofprijzing. Kinderen en zuigelingen vertellen Gods lof.
De mens heerst over de werken van Gods handen. Om de dierenwereld tot zijn doel (bestemming) te laten komen, gaf Adam de dieren hun naam. Heersen is dienen, gericht op het aangaan van relaties. Nieuwsgierigheid, creativiteit en dienstbaarheid zijn de eigenschappen die daarvoor nodig zijn.
De wereld is geschapen als één geheel, met dieren ter land, ter zee en in de lucht. Het vertelt Gods eer en heerlijkheid (Psalm 19[show]Psalm 19
The Law of the LORD Is Perfect

[19:1]The heavens declare the glory of God,

Die leefomgeving is niet vriendelijk meer. De mens moet knokken om te overleven en zijn weg is met doornen en distels bezaaid. Heersen is overheersen, machtsmisbruik en wanbeheer geworden. Egoïsme, chaos en eenzaamheid domineren. De aarde werd de woonplaats van de tegenstander van God.

Life in the Spirit
[8:1]There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.(1) [2]For the law of the Spirit of life has set you(2) free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. [3]For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin,(3) he condemned sin in the flesh, [4]in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. [5]For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. [6]For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. [7]For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. [8]Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
[9]You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. [10]But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. [11]If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
Heirs with Christ
[12]So then, brothers,(4) we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. [13]For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. [14]For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons(5) of God. [15]For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!" [16]The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, [17]and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Future Glory
[18]For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. [19]For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. [20]For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope [21]that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. [22]For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. [23]And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. [24]For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? [25]But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
[26]Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. [27]And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because(6) the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. God's Everlasting Love
[31]What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be(8) against us? [32]He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? [33]Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. [34]Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died--more than that, who was raised--who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.(9) [35]Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Gods Naam is Hem heilig en Zijn liefde voor de mens is grondeloos. Wat is de mens dat U aan hem denkt?
Hij wil de mens opnieuw bij Zich hebben, en in Zijn dienst nemen. Daarvoor gaf Hij Zijn Zoon. Hij nam onze plaats in en door Zijn bloed worden wij gered. In Christus zijn we een nieuwe schepping, een tempel van Zijn Geest. Wie niet gelooft, heeft geen deel, maar zal naar zijn eigen werk rechtvaardig geoordeeld worden.
Door Christus herstelt Hij ook Zijn schepping. Een nieuwe hemel en aarde zal er komen, waarop gerechtigheid en vrede heerst. Geen machtsmisbruik en wanbeheer meer, maar daar genieten we samen van de gaven.
Gods Naam is machtig in de schepping. Daarom is schoonheid de maat. Lofprijzing en aanbidding zijn de middelen.
De mens had een hoge positie, een doel en dienst. Hij heeft daarvoor gaven gekregen van nieuwsgierigheid, creativiteit en dienstbaarheid.
De mens koos echter voor zichzelf en verbrak de relatie met zijn Schepper. Egoïsme, chaos en eenzaamheid zijn de gevolgen, gevoed door het werk van de tegenstander van God, de duivel.
God gaf Zijn Zoon om de relatie te herstellen. Door een persoonlijke keuze tot Jezus Christus wordt iemand tot een nieuwe schepping, een tempel van Zijn Geest.
Herdenken of verwachten? Ik ben opgegroeid met het beeld dat de discipelen maar weinig begrepen van de hemelvaart van de Heere Jezus. Zij stonden Hem maar na te kijken, stelden nog steeds domme vragen, en werden terecht gewezen door de engelen. Maar, klopt dat beeld eigenlijk wel?
Zeker, de discipelen konden maar moeilijk geloven dat Jezus was opgestaan. Het kostte Jezus behoorlijk veel moeite om hen daarvan te overtuigen (Hand 1:3). Stap voor stap laat Hij vertelt hij hen wat er straks, na Zijn vertrek, van hen verwacht wordt, namelijk op pad gaan en het Goede Nieuws verkondigen, onderwijs te geven, gevolg d door tekenen en wonderen. “Wie geloofd zal hebben en gedoopt zal zijn, zal zalig worden.” (Mark 16:16[show]Mark 16:16
[16]Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (ESV) ). Heel de wereld is hun zendingsterrein. En, voegt Hij er nadrukkelijk aan toe: “En zie, Ik ben met u al de dagen, tot de voleinding van de wereld.” (Matt 28:20[show]Matthew 28:20

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees
[23:1]Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, [2]"The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses' seat, [3]so practice and observe whatever they tell you--but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice. [4]They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,(1) and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. [5]They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, [6]and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues [7]and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi(2) by others. [8]But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.(3) [9]And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, [30]saying, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.' [31]Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. [32]Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. [33]You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? [34]Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, [35]so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah,(6) whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. [36]Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Lament over Jerusalem
[37]"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! [38]See, your house is left to you desolate. [39]For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, 'Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.'"
Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple
[24:1]Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. [2]But he answered them, "You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down."
Signs of the Close of the Age
[3]As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" [4]And Jesus answered them, "See that no one leads you astray. [5]For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. [6]And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. [7]For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. [8]All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.
[9]"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. [10]And then many will fall away(7) and betray one another and hate one another. [11]And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. [12]And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. [13]But the one who endures to the end will be saved. [14]And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
The Abomination of Desolation
[15]"So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), [16]then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. [17]Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, [18]and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. [19]And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! [20]Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. [21]For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. [22]And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. [23]Then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'There he is!' do not believe it. [24]For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. [25]See, I have told you beforehand. [26]So, if they say to you, 'Look, he is in the wilderness,' do not go out. If they say, 'Look, he is in the inner rooms,' do not believe it. [27]For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [28]Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.
The Coming of the Son of Man
[29]"Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. [30]Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. [31]And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
The Lesson of the Fig Tree
[32]"From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. [33]So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. [34]Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. [35]Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
No One Knows That Day and Hour
[36]"But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son,(8) but the Father only. [37]For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [38]For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, [39]and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. [40]Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. [41]Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. [42]Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. [45]"Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(9) whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? [46]Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes. [47]Truly, I say to you, he will set him over all his possessions. [48]But if that wicked servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed,' [49]and begins to beat his fellow servants(10) and eats and drinks with drunkards, [50]the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know [51]and will cut him in pieces and put him with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
The Parable of the Ten Virgins
[25:1]"Then the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps(11) and went to meet the bridegroom.(12) [2]Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. [3]For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, [4]but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. [5]As the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. [6]But at midnight there was a cry, 'Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.' [7]Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. [8]And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' [9]But the wise answered, saying, 'Since there will not be enough for us and for you, go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.' [10]And while they were going to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. [11]Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, lord, open to us.' [12]But he answered, 'Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.' [13]Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
The Parable of the Talents
[14]"For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants(13) and entrusted to them his property. [15]To one he gave five talents,(14) to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. [16]He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. [17]So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. [18]But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. [19]Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. [20]And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, 'Master, you delivered to me five talents; here I have made five talents more.' The Final Judgment
[31]"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. [32]Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. [33]And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. [34]Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. [35]For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, [36]I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' [37]Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? [38]And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? [39]And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' [40]And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers,(16) you did it to me.'
[41]"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. [42]For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, [43]I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' ), en na Zijn opstanding sprak Hij met hen over “de dingen die het Koninkrijk van God betreffen.” (Hand 1:3). Logisch dat zijn discipelen dan vragen of Hij ‘in deze tijd voor Israël het Koninkrijk weer oprichten?” (Hand. 1:6). Een Koninkrijk waar Jezus Koning is, is pas echt een Vrederijk; Hij is de Vredevorst (Jes. 9:5). Jezus bestraft hen niet over de gedachte aan een aards Koninkrijk, maar wijst hen op de tijd. Met andere woorden, het Koninkrijk komt, maar wanneer, dat is verborgen.
Dan is het zover. “De Heere dan is, nadat Hij tot hen gesproken had, opgenomen in de hemel en heeft Zich gezet aan de rechterhand van God.” (Mark 16:19[show]Mark 16:19
[19]So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. (ESV) ) Jezus neemt Zijn rechtmatige plaats in! Lukas beschrijft dat Jezus zijn discipelen zegent en al zegenend opgenomen wordt (Luk 24:50-51[show]Luke 24:50-51
The Ascension
[50]Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. [51]While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. (ESV) ). Zij kijken Hem na, ook nadat zij Hem niet meer kunnen zien. Natuurlijk, wie zou dat niet doen als je echt afscheid neemt van de Meester? Ook al is Hij voor je ogen weggenomen, je zou blijven staren. Dat lijkt me geen bewijs dat ze er weinig van begrepen. Juist niet. Ze beseften: Hij is echt als Mens van deze aarde weggegaan, en ook hún burgerschap is nu in de hemelen, waaruit wij ook de Zaligmaker verwachten (Fil 3:20). Een kort woord van de engelen brengt hen weer op aarde. Hij komt terug, zoals Hij gegaan is (Hand 1:11). Geen vermaning, maar verwachting! Geen wonder dat zij in aanbidding stonden: “Zij aanbaden Hem en keerden terug naar Jeruzalem met grote blijdschap.” Luk 24:52[show]Luke 24:52
[52]And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, (ESV) . Hemelvaart is niet alleen herdenken, maar vooral verwachten. Toekomstverwachting!
De hemelvaart van Jezus was niet nodig voor ons, maar voor Hem. Hij nam Zijn plaats in. Hij bracht de Mens bij God, nadat God bij de mensen kwam. Hij ging niet weg, om daarmee te zeggen: nu kunnen jullie het zelf wel, want ‘Ik ben met jullie tot de voleinding van de wereld’.
“Maar zij gingen overal heen om te prediken…” (Mark 16:20[show]Mark 16:20
[20]And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.]] (ESV) ); Dat is het logische gevolg, én gehoorzaamheid. Hoe eerder alle mensen met het Evangelie bereikt worden, hoe eerder hun Meester terug komt. Overal prediken: dat is alleen mogelijk omdat Jezus op Zijn plaats zit. En door Zijn Geest is Hij overal, dankzij Pinksteren.
Nee, zijn discipelen begrepen de hemelvaart van hun Meester heel goed. En ik nu ook beter. Jij?
In januari 2011 presenteerde de Minister van OCW haar aktieplan Beter Presteren, met de nadruk op de kernvakken in het curriculum. Overigens, een aktieplan is nog geen plan, maar alleen ‘het van plan zijn.’ Het echte plan moet nog komen. Haar ambtenaren zijn dat nu aan het schrijven.
Ik heb alvast een paar suggesties op een rijtje gezet. Licht, Lucht en Beweging! Een make over van de school.
1. Installeer in ieder lokaal Philips SchoolVision. Verbetert de concentratie met maar liefst 18%. Driekwart minder geobserveerde hyperactiviteit en daling van de foutfrequentie van 45%. Kosten voor onze school: ongeveer 100.000 euro.
2. Zorg dat in ieder lokaal het binnenmilieu optimaal is. Het verbetert de resultaten, al is het percentage is niet duidelijk. Uit een onderzoek bleken de resultaten voor taal met 6% en voor rekenen met 23% te verbeteren. Kosten voor onze school: een heleboel, want onderzoek van de gg&gd Utrecht wees uit dat er bouwkundige aanpassingen nodig zijn om het binnenmilieu te verbeteren. Een raampje open biedt helaas te weinig soelaas. Minder leerlingen in de klas zou natuurlijk ook een optie zijn, maar om het onderwijs betaalbaar te houden, moeten er toch zeker 25 in een klas zitten.
3. Start iedere dag met ochtendgym. 15 minuten beweging per dag verbetert de concentratie al. De effecten van beweging op de leerresultaten zijn niet sterk, maar wel positief. Daarna een gezamenlijk ontbijt. Natuurlijk uit de gezonde kantine.
4. Door de schoolomroep klinkt zachtjes barokmuziek. Dat verbetert de concentratie en leerlingen kunnen 2-5 keer sneller leren. Kosten: nihil, waarschijnlijk alleen de jaarlijkse kosten van BUMA of zoiets.
5. Planten in de klas. Planten nemen natuurlijk CO2 in, dus dat is meegenomen, maar sommige soorten zuiveren ook de lucht. Om planten in het lokaal te krijgen, moeten er wel wat leerlingen uit, want vol=vol. Hoewel, we kunnen natuurlijk ook hangplanten nemen. Leuk, van die brackets met Geraniums aan de muur (anders hangen ze voor de lampen). Kosten? Ik schat in dat we er een abonnement voor moeten nemen bij een plantenverzorger. 10.000 euro per jaar?
Gek eigenlijk, dat we zo de nadruk leggen op toetsen en normen enz, terwijl het het aanpassen van de omgeving positief invloed heeft op de leerresultaten en gedrag. Bovendien, een beter binnenmilieu verlaagt het ziekteverzuim. Een kleine rekensom: op een formatie van 50 fte betekent 3% minder verzuim grofweg kostenverlaging van een kleine 90.000 euro. Nu nog een sponsor vinden, want een dergelijke investering uit het reguliere budget valt het nu niet te halen.
